These workshops are attended by artists, grafic designer and
enthusiastic people interested in calligraphy, beginners as well as
advanced. You have the possibility to learn in a professional tuition
structure the classical scripts step by step and/or to fine tune.
Text composition and abstraction are part of the experimental
enthusiastic process with alternativ tools. Developing intuitiv
forms gives you another point of view for a new sensitive writing
and designing in your further way of calligraphy. There are a lot of
practical exercises. With training in classical and modern layout
techniques as composition will help you clarify some problems with.

A comprehensive calligraphy book collection and the integrated pre- sentation of her fine work will be a source of inspiration in addition.
Karin Bauer is an established freelance calligrapher, artist and
lecturer in artschools for years. Some Workshops also take place
at her studio in Hamburg. She is exhibited national and inter-
national. She was 3 years each committee member and deputy
chairman of ARS SCRIBENDI e.V., is member of diff. European
calligraphy societies. You can find more under

For beginners and advanced

This courses are for beginners and advanced.
The principles of my teaching is individual. Participants
work in progress is inspiring to newcomers and to remark
the countless possibilities in calligraphy.
The best you start with basic letter studies to understand
how does the principles of a latin alphabet work, the kind
of mastering step by step an alphabet, the layout of letters
and finally a text, a fluently and rhythmically writing.

Experimental calligraphy exercises between former
studying lessons brings a lot of spontaneous and fresh
ideas and you'll enjoy it.
Early enrolement is recommended. The autumn course
September till November is fully booked.
But you can book the weekend class in my studio from 08. -
09.10. 11 or you can reserve a place for the evening course
in the museum from 18. January until end of March 2012.

Humanistic Cursive - Basic

These fine letters we know from the italian history in origin will be
shown, performed and given you the possibility to learn and
train the essencial basics, the rools of proportions the seeing
for a masterly layout to bring you up to a solid important basis.
And finally mastering the classic style and develope these letters
(signs) by experimenting and abstracting with different tools.
A work will be created at the end, a *leporello (*s. "Don Giovanni"
by W. A. Mozart).

Kapitalis Rustica - open
For experienced writers

Eine markante, senkrecht stehende Schrift mit
kräftigen Serifen und sehr schmalen vertikalen
Strichverläufen.
Man hat sie z. B. in Pompeij als Grafitti an Mauer-
wänden entdeckt. Eine Schrift, die wegen dieser
eigenwilligen Form eine Renaissance erlebt.
Sie erlaubt auch eine weiche, schwungvollere Art
mit dem Pinsel geschrieben (2. Workshop).

Experimental Kalligraphie - "Automatic Pen" - open
Experience in writing of a 'Cursive' will be very helpful

Das kalligrafische Arbeiten mit Automatic Pen stellt sich, nach
dem klassischen Schreiben mit der zierlicheren Bandzugfeder,
oft als nicht ganz 'geschmeidig' dar. Hier soll einmal das ex-
pressive Handhaben, besonders das Verfremden und Abstra-
hieren der Alphabetformen, geübt werden. Auch expressives
Schreiben ist damit möglich und kommt dem natürlichen Duktus
(Linie, Form) des 'Handschreibens' ziemlich nahe.
Den Abschluss des Workshops bildet ein frei gestaltetes *Leporello.

Karolingische Minuscel - open
For Beginner and Advanced

Die Karolingische Minuskel - eine Kleinbuchstabenschrift mit
einer neuen graphischen Anmutung nach dem Schrifttyp
der Unziale - näherte sich am Ende des 8. Jh.'s allmählich
ihrer bekanntesten Form nach Karl dem Großen (771-814),
der an einer Schriftreform sehr interessiert war. Entwickelt
wurde sie von Alkuin. Dieser Gelehrte, Benediktiner und Abt
der Kalligraphieschule in Tours entwickelte dort das Alphabet
dieser feinen, charakteristischen und schneller schreibbaren
Buchschrift bis etwa Mitte des 9. Jh.'s als die "Karolingische"-
die Schrift der Gelehrten - ausgereift war. An dieser werden wir
uns beim Erlernen orientieren.
Sie ist einzeln wie auch in Verbindung mit illustrativen
Elementen und anderen Schrifttypen durch ihren zierlich
wirkenden, rundlichen Duktus vielseitig einsetzbar.
